Our week in review

If you're wondering if I've been purposely slacking off on keeping this blog updated, the answer is actually "no". This past week was not one I'd like to repeat ANY time soon. Bria caught the "VBS bug" and was really sick, from Sunday afternoon - Saturday morning. She threw up no less than 3x every day, most of those being dry heaves. Thursday afternoon she was so miserable. She was throwing a fit about something (probably wanting food and I wouldn't give her any) and I noticed that she was really upset, but there weren't any tears coming out of her eyes. I had taken her to the pediatrician on Tuesday and he said that was one thing to watch for with dehydration. So I called him that afternoon (Thursday) and told him what was going on with her and he said we might be better off taking her to Children's Mercy Urgent Care to get some fluids. So, Matt's mom came over and stayed with Tyler (who was on his "recovery" day from his thankfully very short bout of the bug) and Bria & I went over to pick Matt up from work and head over to the hospital. Fortunately, it wasn't busy and we got right in.

They wanted to do some bloodwork and give her some fluids. I was thinking what a hard time they were going to have since she was so dehydrated and they did. They managed to get the 2 little vials of blood they needed from the vein in her hand, but then the vein collapsed and they had to put the IV port in her arm. It took her being "toddler-swaddled", 2 nurses holding her legs and body, me holding her head, and another nurse to actually get the IV in. Bria was thrashing about like a madwoman. She was panicked. I could see it in her eyes. Once they got the IV in, it took Matt & I another 45 min - 1 hr to get her calmed down. Through her blood work, they were able to determine that her blood sugar was extremely low too (which probably attributed to the panic as much if not more than the dehydration did), which considering she couldn't keep anything down, including Pedialyte, didn't surprise me a bit. They gave us some sucrose (sugar water) to dip her pacifier in and that helped calm her down some. They also gave her 2 bags of fluid and some anti-nausea medicine as well as some glucose. We were there for 4 hrs. All in all, not bad. We were very thankful that even though there was talk of admitting her to the hospital, they were satisfied with the improvement she had made while we were there to let her go home. Friday was better than Thursday was and she actually ate some food, though she did end up throwing up a couple of times on that day as well. Saturday was the first full day she kept everything inside.

My sick babies, Thursday morning

Earlier in the week, she was still sick,
but perked up a little bit when we went outside.

She didn't want to get in the pool, but
she really loved playing with the little fountain.

Hugs for his froggy pool

It's no babbling brook, but we had a big thunderstorm about a week and a half ago and after it passed, we had a little stream in the ditch in front of our house. The kids had a blast running and splashing in the puddles.

The VBS shirts this year came in 6-8 as the smallest size available. They were a little big on Tyler, but Bria could have worn hers as a dress. She found the shirt quite entertaining, as you can see. She keeps asking me to wear her "frog" shirt (it was the SonQuest Rainforest, so there's a tree frog in the picture on the front).

She was cracking up at this point. She's a crazy little girl. But we've found that when she's happy, she's REALLY happy. And when she's not, LOOK OUT. Still trying to work on curbing the tantrums, but so far the "terrible twos" are very evident. ;)
